Abstract

The mini-review analyzes experimental and theoretical researches and applied applications of nanolasers based on semiconductor and perovskite quantum dots. It is shown that the development of nanolasers based on quantum dots is a consequence of long-term progress in the physics and chemistry of semiconductors. The quantum size effect made it possible to vary the emission and absorption spectra by changing the sizes of quantum dots in the nanoscale. This circumstance allowed quantum dot ensembles to demonstrate high quantum yields and narrow emission spectral widths. Taking these effects into account, nanolasers with high optical characteristics were developed.

Current trends in laser nanotechnology development take into account environmental requirements to reduce the toxicity of quantum dots. The use of hybrid nanosystems containing perovskite, semiconductor, and dielectric quantum dots improves crystallinity, increases charge carrier mobility, and efficiently transfers charge between layers, thereby enhancing quantum efficiency and expanding the emission spectrum from the visible to near-infrared range.

The applied aspect is due to the potential capabilities of nanolasers in creating compact photonic chips, biosensors, and single photon sources, which is ensured by high photoluminescent efficiency, narrow emission band, and low generation threshold.
