Abstract

The method of standard contact porometry as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy has been used for investigation of multilevel structure of collagen matrix which can be considered as a prospective material to create membranes with functional properties. Earlier developed geometrical model of non-intersecting cylinders has been applied to calculate the size of fibers forming collagen matrix. Functions of hydrophilic and hydrophobic pores formed by different structural elements have been analyzed. Chemical modification has been shown to result in the structure loosing at the levels of macromolecules, microfibrils, and fibrils. At the same time, insertion of bentonite particles into the matrix causes structure compactisation at the level of primary fibers.
